A fellow dad shared this with me and I’ve kept it close to remind myself.

SOONER THAN YOU THINK–
One day
Sooner than you think
The echoes of your child’s laughter
Will have faded from your house

One day
Sooner than you think
Their bed will be empty
Their toys gone and their posters taken down

One day
Sooner than you think
Their messy room will be clean
And used for something else

One day
Sooner than you think
The house they lit up with their voices
Will be silent except for those soft sounds grown-ups make

Sooner than you think
The basketball hoop in the driveway
Will stand unused all year

Sooner than you think
The swing set in the backyard
Will be given away

Your child’s spot at the dinner table

Your son or daughter will visit you
Just for awhile when they have time

But today your child is home
